What We Do

Activity in the brain gives rise to our thoughts, perceptions, emotions, memories and behavior. Few endeavors inspire as much wonder or have the potential for as much societal impact as the grand challenges of discovering the brain's uncharted underlying principles, determining how circuit dysfunction leads to disorders, and designing interventions that not only alleviate impairment but unlock human potential. Progress in neuroscience and neuroengineering should not occur in a vacuum --- we must simultaneously explore the intersecting societal challenges and opportunities that come with these advances, including accessibility, individuality, policy, ethics, artistic expression, and design. The future will undoubtedly see an increase in technologies that affect the brain, ranging from consumer electronics to integrated bioelectronic devices. Realizing this potential to better understand our own humanity, its neural underpinnings, and the promise of new neurotechnologies requires unprecedented transdisciplinary research and education.

Neuro Next is an initiative at Georgia Tech to foster an inclusive collaborative community tailored to the modern discovery and innovation approaches necessary to address these grand challenges. The Neuro Next community is distinctive in its use of cutting-edge technology to interface with the brain, its focus on deciphering the complex systems that govern the brain to transform our understanding, and its commitment to maximizing the overall benefit of responsible innovation to society.
